Titans sweep Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball team earned a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep Sunday against Thiel College. The Titans posted a 4-3 (10 inn.) victory in game one before registering a 7-0 shutout in game two.

Westminster improved to 9-10 overall and 4-2 in the PAC with Sunday's victories. Thiel fell to 4-15 overall and 2-3 in league play.

Westminster will host the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Tuesday. The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 1:30 p.m.

Game 1: Westminster 4, Thiel 3 (10 inn.)
Sophomore starter
Jake Vitale (New Castle, Pa. | Union) was terrific in the game one no decision, allowing two runs (2 earned) on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts across 7.0 innings. Junior Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa. | Franklin) evened his record at 2-2 this season after throwing 3.0 innings in relief of Vitale, allowing one run (1 earned) on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Senior designated hitter Frankie Manios (Warren, Ohio | Howland)
went 2-of-3 with an RBI while junior left fielder Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa. | Blackhawk) finished 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Junior second baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa. | Greater Latrobe) went 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

Manios' two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 1-1. Shimko's RBI's triple, followed by Radza's run-scoring double, in the seventh gave Westminster a 3-1 lead. Thiel scratched out single runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to force extras. After stranding a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the 10th, Westminster plated the game-winning run off of a Thiel fielding error. Senior center fielder Brandon Cooper (Oakdale, Pa. | West Allegheny) singled before graduate student right fielder Seth Schrader (Fredonia, N.Y. | Fredonia) drew a walk. Cooper scored the game-winner on the error.

Thiel's Calvin Cackowski went 3-for-5 with and RBI and a stolen base in game one.

Game 2: Westminster 7, Thiel 0
Following Schrader's RBI single in the bottom of the first, junior first baseman Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y. | Allendale Columbia) struck for a three-run home run to give Westminster a 4-0 lead. Sophomore catcher Marco Gambino (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Thomas Jefferson) scored an unearned run on a Shimko double after singling in the fourth to stretch the lead to 5-0. Later in the inning, Cambell delivered an RBI double that scored Shimko and extended the lead to 6-0. Junior designated hitter Carter Chinn (Grove City, Pa. | Grove City) delivered a sacrifice fly in the sixth that scored Docum after a leadoff double to close out the scoring.

Sophomore Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa. | Lincoln) picked up his first victory of the season in game two, improving to 1-2. He threw 6.0 shutout innings, allowing one walk and eight hits while striking out three. Junior Timothy Lewis (West Middlesex, Pa. | Wilmington) secured the three inning save, allowing just a pair of hits.

Dockum went 2-for-4 in game two with a home run, a double, three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Schrader finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
