Grove City tops Titans

GROVE CITY, Pa.--The Westminster College men's lacrosse team was dealt a 20-7 setback Saturday afternoon by Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City College at Robert E. Thorn Field. 

Grove City pushed its overall record to 4-7 and its league record to 2-0. Westminster fell to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in PAC play. 

Sophomore midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va. | Douglas S. Freeman) scored four goals for the second-straight game. Senior attack Nick Hubner (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Plum) added two goals while senior midfielder Hamish Mathwin (Marion, Australia | Westminster School) added one goal. Senior attack Ryan Greer (Cranberry Township, Pa. | Seneca Valley) had one assist to run his career points total to 167, just three shy of establishing a new program record (169-Ryan Shorts, 2016-19). 

Wesminster answered four-straight Grove City goals in the first period with a pair of scores by Jones and another by Hubner and trailed by two, 6-4, with under a minute to go in the first period. Jones netted his third goal of the quarter with 20 seconds remaining and cut Grove City's lead to one, 6-5, heading into the second quarter. 

The Wolverines scored five-straight goals to start the second to go up 11-5. Mathwin closed the first half with a goal at the 1:30 mark and Westminster went into the break down 11-6.

Three-straight Grove City goals to start the third period extended the Wolverines' lead to eight, 14-6. Jones fired in his fourth score of the game with just over four minutes to go in the quarter. Grove City held Westminster scoreless in the fourth period. 

Sophomore defender Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah | Wasatch) finished with six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Senior long stick midfielder Mike Roman (Norristown, Pa. | Germantown Academy) had five ground balls and caused one turnover. Senior defender Kyle Hoeflich (New Windsor, Md. | Francis Scott Key) and freshman midfielder Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y. | Huntington) had two caused turnovers each for the Titans. 

Junior Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa. | North Allegheny) won 10-of-18 faceoffs and had five ground balls.

Freshman goalkeeper Brendan Siwik (Aldie, Va. | John Champe) made 13 saves. 


Matt Blythe paced Grove City with six goals. 

Grove City held a 50-35 advantage in shots, including a 33-22 edge in shots on goal. Grove City won 16 faceoffs while Westminster won 13. The Wolverines were successful on 25-of-26 clears and the Titans went 21-of-31 clear attempts.

Westminster hosts Allegheny College Wednesday, April 5 at the UPMC Sports Complex. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
