Titans claim shutout wins to open PAC play

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio--The Westminster College softball team opened its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule Sunday afternoon with a pair of shutout victories at Franciscan University. The Titans scored a 10-0 (5 inn.) win in game one before piling up 28 hits in a 24-0 (5 inn.) game two triumph. 

Westminster, winners of five straight, pushed its season record to 10-4. Franciscan fell to 0-10. 

Westminster will host PAC rival Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday. The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.

Game 1: Westminster 10, Franciscan 0 (5 inn.)
Up 3-0 after three innings, Westminster used a six-run fourth to take control. Senior shortstop Alexis Yates (Oakdale, Pa. | South Fayette) had a two-run base hit and senior first baseman Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa. | Laurel) delivered a two-run run double to highlight the six-hit, six-run frame. Yates' RBI double in the sixth closed out the scoring.

Yates went 4-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, two stolen bases and a pair of runs scored. Sophomore catcher Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa. | Dubois Central Catholic) went 2-for-3 with an RBI. 

Graduate student starter Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio | East Liverpool) 
moved her season record to 4-2 after allowing two hits and striking out five in 3.0 innings. Senior Abbegail Froehlich (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Plum) gave up three hits with five strikeouts and a walk in 2.0 innings. 

Game 2: Westminster 24, Franciscan 0 (5 inn.)
Fifteen players had hits in the Titans' game two win, including nine multi-hit performances. The Titans struck for 10 runs in the first before adding nine more in the third and another five in the fourth. 

Yates was once again terrific at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored. Senior outfielder Ashley Wire (Poland, Ohio | Poland Seminary), Latess and Meholick also had three hits each in game two. Wire finished 3-for-3 with three doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. Latess went 3-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base while Meholick went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. 

Junior Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, Pa. | Grove City) improved to 5-1 this season with the victory. She allowed three hits and struck out three in 3.0 innings. Sophomore Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa. | Norwin) and freshman Emily Watts (Aliquippa, Pa. | Hopewell) both threw a scoreless inning of relief.
