Titans forge Friday split

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.--The Westminster College softball team earned a split Friday on its final day at THE Spring Games. The Titans suffered a 9-5 loss to the State University of New York at New Paltz before posting a 17-8 (6 inn.) victory over Smith College. 

Westminster went 6-4 during its 10-game Spring Break schedule. 

The Titans will host the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Tuesday to open its 2023 home schedule. The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. 

New Paltz 9, Westminster 5
The Hawks grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the third the Titans plated a pair of runs when senior first baseman Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa. | Laurel) delivered a two-out, two-run double. New Paltz, leading by one after four full frames, struck for three runs in the fifth and another three runs in the sixth to go up 9-2.

In the bottom of the seventh senior shortstop Alexis Yates (Oakdale, Pa. | South Fayette) singled and scored freshman third baseman Elliana Hsieh (York, Pa. | Central York) after her leadoff base hit before senior outfielder Ashley Wire (Poland, Ohio | Poland Seminary) smacked a two-run single, scoring sophomore second baseman Sarah Eisenhuth (Harrison City, Pa. | Penn-Trafford) and Yates. New Paltz starter Lindsay Roman retired the final two batters to secure the win the for the Hawks.

Yates went 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Wire went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. 

Graduate student starter Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio | East Liverpool) allowed nine runs (6 earned) on 14 hits with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks in the complete game loss. 

Westminster 17, Smith 8 (6 inn.) 
Juno Shantz gave Smith a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the first with a grand slam. Trailing 4-3 after two innings Westminster batted around in the third, striking for six runs in the frame. Sophomore outfielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa. | Norwin) blasted a three-run home run, and three batters later, senior second baseman Mia Greco (New Castle, Pa. | Neshannock) delivered a two-run shot to push the Titans' lead to 9-4. 

Westminster added two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to go up 13-4. Senior outfielder Emma Gurley (Painesville, Ohio | Gilmore Academy) had a two-run double in the fourth and Latess had a two-run home run in the fifth. 

In the sixth a Meholik bases-loaded walk scored Hsieh before Latess delivered a two-run single that pushed the Westminster lead to 17-6. 

Nine Westmister players had hits against Smith. Latess finished 2-for-4 with a home run, five RBIs and a run scored. Lokay was 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, three RBIs, two runs scored an three stolen bases. Gurley went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. 

Junior starter Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, Pa. | Grove City) improved to 4-1 in the circle with the victory. She allowed six runs (6 earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. 

The 17 runs were the most in a game for Westminster since posting a 21-1 (5 inn.) victory at Allegheny College on April 2, 2017.
