Titans nipped by Wheaton

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.--The Westminster College baseball team dropped a 9-8 decision to Wheaton College (Mass.) Wednesday morning at the Chain O'Lakes Complex.

Wheaton improved to 5-2 this season. Westminster fell to 4-5.

A six-run first inning fueled Wheaton in the win as the Lyons sent 11 men to the plate in the frame. Cavan Brady delivered a bases-clearing triple to highlight the inning.

Westminster countered with a three-run bottom of the first. With one out, graduate student outfielder Seth Schrader (Fredonia, N.Y. | Fredonia) and senior outfielder Brandon Cooper (Oakdale, Pa. | West Allegheny) roped back-to-back run scoring doubles and junior first baseman Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y. | Allendale Columbia) singled to plate Cooper.

A five-run fifth inning pushed the Titans out to a 8-6 lead. Junior designated hitter Carter Chinn (Grove City, Pa. | Grove City), junior catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa. | West Middlesex) and sophomore third baseman Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa. | Shaler) lined three-straight RBI singles before junior second baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa. | Greater Latrobe) smacked a two-run double that scored Tomko and Campbell.

Wheaton evened the score at 6-6 in the top of the sixth with a pair of run-scoring singles. In the eighth Kevin Matos' RBI groundout scored Brady, who led off the inning with a walk. He stole second and advanced the third on Rob Wirtanen's sacrifice bunt.

Junior reliever Phillip Keller (Coraopolis, Pa. | Montour) was the hard-luck loser for Westminster. He allowed one run (1 earned) on one hit with a strikeout and four walks. Sophomore starter Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa. | Lincoln) picked up a no decision after allowing six runs (5 earned) on eight hits with eight strikeouts and a walk in 5.0 innings. Freshman Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa. | Blackhawk) threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Schrader and Cooper each had two hits, including a double, an RBI and two runs scored for Westminster. The Titans piled up 10 hits in the loss.

Brady paced Wheaton with a 3-for-5 day. He had a triple, a stolen base, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Westminster will face Dickinson College Friday in Auburndale, Florida. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
