Westminster takes two in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla.--The Westminster College softball team opened its 2023 season Sunday afternoon at THE Spring Games. The Titans secured a 6-1 victory over the University of New England before picking up a 9-4 win over Washington College (Md.). 

Westminster will play a pair Monday afternoon at the Auburndale Sports Complex. The Titans will face St. Joseph's University-Long Island at 2 p.m. and Lake Forest College at 4:30 p.m.

Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio | East Liverpool) earned the victory against New England, allowing one run (1 earned) on five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in 6.0 innings. Sophomore Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa. | Norwin) threw a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit with one walk. 

Senior shortstop Alexis Yates (Oakdale, Pa. | South Fayette) went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Senior outfielder Brooke Atkins (New Castle, Pa. | Laurel) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

Yates scored on a wild pitch in the first before Atkins scored on a New England error in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Senior first baseman Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa. | Laurel) delivered a two-out, two-run double in the fourth to push Westminster's lead to 4-1. 

Yates gave the Titans a 5-1 lead after scoring on an error in the sixth. Two batters later, senior outfielder Ashley Wire (Poland, Ohio | Poland Seminary) singled and scored Atkins from third to push the lead to 6-1.

Seven players had hits against New England. Westminster outhit the Nor'Easters 10-6.

Westminster 9, Washington College (Md.) 4
The Titans pounded out 12 hits in the victory over the Shorewomen. Wire went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Senior outfielder Emma Gurley (Painesville, Ohio | Gilmore Academy) finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. 

Junior Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, Pa. | Grove City) earned the complete game win in the circle, allowing four runs (4 earned) with three strikeouts and four walks. 

In the bottom of the first, Wire singled with two outs and advanced to second on wild pitch before Latess drove her in with a run-scoring double. Gurley's RBI single scored Latess one batter later. 

Washington took a brief 3-2 lead in the top of the second, but the Titans jumped back in front with a three-run bottom half of the inning. Wire's RBI single scored Atkins to cap the scoring. 

Gurley led off the bottom of the third with a single and stole second before sophomore catcher Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa., Dubois Central Catholic) drove her in with a single to left, pushing Westminster's lead to 6-3. 

Washington picked up a run in the top of the fourth, but RBI groundouts by Latess and Malzak in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, extended the Titans' lead to 8-4. Wire singled in Yates in the sixth to close out the scoring. 

Westminster scored at least one run in each of its six innings.
