Westminster men edged in overtime

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team suffered a 99-94 overtime loss to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Geneva College Wednesday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Geneva, winners of three straight, improved to 15-7 overall and 12-5 in the PAC. Westminster fell to 13-9 overall and 11-6 in league play.

Six Westminster players finished in double figures. Freshman Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio | Boardman) posted an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double. It was his third double-double of the year. Junior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio | Springfield Local) registered 18 points and eight rebounds.

Freshman Bobby Ray (Jefferson, Ohio | Jefferson) added 14 points and five rebounds while senior Austin O'Hara (Girard, Ohio | Girard) finished with 13 points and six boards. Junior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio | West Branch) and freshman Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio | Chaney) scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Leone had a season-high seven assists.

Ryan Rachic led Geneva with game highs in points (32) and rebounds (16). Trevor Tipton finished with 28 points and five boards.

Westminster shot 43.4 percent (33-76) from the field and hit 9-of-21 (42.9%) three-point field goal attempts. Geneva finished shooting 46.4 percent (32-69) from the floor and knocked down 14-of-27 (51.9%) of its three-point attempts.

Geneva outrebounded Westminster 44-39.

After DePietro's bucket put Westminster up two, 31-29, with under five minutes to go in the first half, Geneva used a 14-3 scoring run to head into the break up nine, 43-34. Ryan Rachic had 17 first half points to lead the Golden Tornadoes, going 6-of-9 from the field.

Ryan Rachic drilled a three-pointer with under 11 minutes to play in the second that extended Geneva's lead to 13, 64-51. The Titans doubled up the Golden Tornadoes 26-13 over the final 10:43 to tie the game at 77-77 at the end of regulation. Clark's putback with just over a minute remaining evened the score. He scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half.

O'Hara buried a three-pointer with 4:24 to go in overtime that gave Westminster an 80-79 lead. Geneva, fueled by a 12-3 scoring run, pushed its lead to eight, 91-83, on a Trevor Tipton three-pointer with just over a minute remaining. Leone's jumper with 10 seconds to go cut the deficit to three, 97-94, but Trevor Tipton hit a pair of late free throws to secure the five-point conference victory for Geneva. Trevor Tipton scored 11 of his 28 points in the overtime period, going 3-of-4 from three-point range.
