Titan men nipped in season opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's lacrosse team fell to The College of Wooster 12-10 in the 2023 lidlifter Wednesday night at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Junior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y. | Ithaca) posted five points on three goals and a pair of assists to pace Westminster. He registered the 100th point of his career Wednesday. 

Junior attack Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md. | Loyola Blakefield) added four points on one goal and three assists. Senior midfielder Hamish Mathwin (Marion, Australia | Westminster School) finished with three goals while senior attack Ryan Greer (Cranberry Township, Pa. | Seneca Valley) added two goals and an assist. 

Junior faceoff Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa. | North Allegheny) had a team-high five ground balls and won 9-of-20 faceoffs. Wednesday, he became the program's career leader in ground balls (191). 

Senior midfielder Mike Roman (Norristown, Pa., Germantown Academy), sophomore midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va. | Douglas S. Freeman) and junior defender Aaron Alderette (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) each had a caused turnover. 

Freshman Brendan Siwik (Aldie, Va. | John Champe) made eight saves in his collegiate debut. 

Trailing 6-0 after the first period, Greer scored his first goal of the season 40 seconds into the second. The Titans went into the half down 9-3. 

Trailing 10-3 three minutes into the third, Westminster scored three-straight goals to cut the deficit to four, 10-6. Waight's goal with under a minute to go in the period trimmed Wooster's lead to four, 11-7, going into the fourth. 

Wooster netted the first goal of the fourth, but Westminster posted three-straight scores, capped by Mathwin's man-up goal with 1:41 left in regulation. 


Westminster had eight turnovers while Wooster turned over possession seven times. The Fighting Scots won 14-of-24 faceoffs. 

The Titans will travel to Ohio Wesleyan University (0-1) Saturday. Opening faceoff at Selby Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
