Murrio's double-double leads Westminster to win over Allegheny

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College fifth-year Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa.) paced the Titans in Wednesday night's 64-53 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Allegheny College at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium, finishing with a 26-point, 13-rebound double-double.

Westminster improved to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the league. Allegheny fell to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in the PAC.

Wednesday's double-double was Murrio's first this season. She finished 7-of-18 from the field and went 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Murrio's 26 points and 13 boards were season highs.

Senior Caitlyn Condoleon (Warren, Ohio, Warren JFK) added eight points and two assists while sophomore Gracie Schill (Rootstown, Ohio, Akron Hoban) had seven points and a pair of rebounds. Fifth-year Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, Ohio, Ursuline) totaled six points and eight rebounds and graduate student Camden Hergenrother (Salem, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) chipped in with six points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) finished with four points and a career-high nine rebounds.

Sofia Genareo led three Allegheny players in double figures, finishing with 18 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists. Sarah Santicola had a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double while Emily Lauer added 10 points and four rebounds. Jess Bickert added eight points and 13 rebounds.

Tied 13-13 after one, Westminster whittled Allegheny's 27-21 lead down to two after Murrio and Hess both connected on two free throws down the stretch. The Gators led 27-25 at the half.

With just over a minute to go in the third, Murrio's layup tied things up at 39-39. She had nine points in the quarter. Santicola hit a pair of free throws with under a minute to go in the period and the Gators carried a 41-39 lead into the fourth.

Westminster began the fourth quarter riding a 10-2 scoring run and went up six, 49-43, with 6:14 remaining in regulation. Allegheny pulled to within two, 51-49, when Genareo split a pair of free throws, but Westminster's 7-0 spurt extended the Titans' lead to nine, 58-49, with 50 seconds left. Westminster went 8-of-10 from the free throw line in the final minute to wrap up the 11-point win.

Westminster finished with a 45-42 rebounding advantage and shot a season-high 87.0 percent (20-23) from the free throw line. The 20 made free throws were the most in a game since going 20-of-29 in a seven-point home win over Pitt-Greensburg on Nov. 29, 2022. Allegheny's 18 turnovers were turned into 21 points for Westminster.

Westminster will travel to Chatham University Saturday. Tipoff at the Athletics and Fitness Center (AFC) is scheduled for 12 p.m.
