Westminster dealt narrow loss by California (Pa.)

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College junior Ryleigh Valone (Erie, Pa., Villa Maria Academy) and freshman Emma Overlingas (Pittsburgh, Pa., Baldwin) each went 2-0 in Friday afternoon's 5-4 non-conference loss to California (Pa.).

Westminster fell to 9-5, while California (Pa.) pushed its season record to 3-4.

The Titans earned wins in two of three doubles matches. Overlingas and junior Taylor Dlugozima (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) got things going with an 8-6 victory over Sierra Everett and Carmen Duran at No. 3. The pair is 9-1 this fall. Valone and senior Caroline Fox (Acton, Calif., Vasquez) recorded an 8-6 decision over Bega Gotor and Peyton Reese at No. 2. 

Overlingas evened the match at 3-3 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Reese at No. 5 singles. She is 13-1 this season and currently owns a 12-match win streak. 

Trailing 5-3, Valone closed out the match with a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Gotor at No 3. She owns a 9-4 overall record this season and has won seven of her last 10.

Westminster enters next week's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Titans will host No. 5 Washington & Jefferson in the quarterfinal round Tuesday at 1 p.m.
