Women’s Basketball: Titans Down Bison, Tally Fifth-Straight Win

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster women's basketball team defeated its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) counterpart Bethany, 62-56, at home on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was highlighted by a 10-0 run by Westminster (8-5, 5-2 PAC) at the end of the second quarter. After the run, the Titans took a 28-26 lead to intermission.

"We knew Bethany was going to be tough," said 20th-year head coach Rosanne Scott. "We are used to those second-chance points with offensive rebounds and they did a really good job boxing us out. We had some other players step up which was great. Defensively I feel we executed the game plan pretty well today." In the fourth quarter, the Titans had a pair of clutch plays. Senior Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) hit a three-pointer to give the Titans a 53-51 lead with 3:20 to play. On the following possession, junior Camden Hergenrother (Salem, OH / Cardinal Mooney) knocked down a three-pointer, extending the Westminster lead (56-51).

"We do those at the end of practice (situational drills) just to make some stuff up," Scott added "We have done a good job staying focused and knowing what to do and paying attention to the scouting report."

The Titans were led by Hergenrother, who registered a career-best 22 points to go along with four rebounds, and a team-high three steals. Polczynski tallied 12 points, three assists, and two steals. First-year Mackenzie Powell (Harrison City, PA / Penn-Trafford) chipped in with ten points (tying a career-best five made field goals) and two boards. Junior Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) recorded seven points and dished out a career- and game-best seven assists.

"We came in with the scouting report and a plan. I think everyone did their role in contributing to that plan," Polczynski added "It feels good on behalf of the whole team."

Westminster's next game is scheduled for Monday, January 17 as it hosts Chatham in a conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
