Women’s Soccer: Titans Tame Lions in Convincing Win

Written by George “Maui” Hillen

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster women's soccer team won, 5-1, against Penn-State Altoona at home on Sunday.

Senior Mackenzie Hupp (Willoughboy, OH / Willoughboy South) striked first by scoring an early goal at the 2:05 mark, assisted by junior Sophia Kaplan (Mentor, OH / Mentor) and first-year Kylee Shannon (Quantico, MD / James M. Bennett). Less than a minute later, Shannon scored a goal of her own, putting the pressure on the Lions. As the first half continued, senior Abby Steinbeck (Windber, PA / Windber) found first-year Lydia Ohm (Pittsburgh, PA / North Hills) for a goal to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

During the 33rd minute, Amanda Hazel of Penn State put the Lions on the scoreboard – its only goal of the contest. Westminster carried a 3-1 lead to intermission.

Once the second-half action kicked off, the Titans' defense suffocated Penn State limiting its scoring opportunities. En route to imminent victory, first-year Natalie Vilchek (West Newton, PA / Yough) added to Westminster's lead with a goal; which was assisted by junior Hannah Kroll (Karns City, PA / Karns City). Four minutes later, first-year Brooke Horvath (Murrysville, PA / Franklin Regional) put the game away scoring her third goal of the season (assisting on the play was junior Julia Redilla (Cranberry Township, PA / Seneca Valley)).

Westminster outshot Penn State Altoona (30-4) and bested them in shots-on-goal (20-3). The Titans also had the advantage in corner kicks (11-1).

The Titans are back in action Tuesday, September 7 at home against Carlow University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
