Women’s Soccer: First-Years Shine in Westminster’s Season-Opening Win

Written by George “Maui” Hillen

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster women's soccer team won their season opener, 3-0, against John Carroll University at home on Wednesday.

Westminster gained early momentum in the 28th minute from first-year Brooke Horvath (Murrysville, PA / Franklin Regional) as she scored the game's first goal, assisted by classmate Allie Augustine (Cortland, OH / Lakeview). As the first half was nearing an end, both defenses made significant plays to keep their teams in the game. The Titans maintained a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, strong defense and opportunistic scoring was the name of the game for the Titans, continuing to shut out the Blue Streaks while scoring two goals late in the frame. The first came in the 82nd minute from Augustine, assisted by Horvath and first-year Lydia Ohm (Pittsburgh, PA / North Hills). Five minutes later, Horvath scored her second of the game, assisted by Augustine.

Westminster outshot John Carroll (16-8) and bested them in shots-on-goal (10-3).

Senior goalkeeper Camille Holzschuh (Youngstown, OH / Boardman) earned the win by getting three saves in complete game shutout.

Westminster is back in action on Saturday, September 4 as it travels to Huntingdon, Pa. to take on Juniata College. Kickoff is scheduled at 2 p.m.
