Men’s Soccer: Three Unanswered Goals Lifts Titans Over Cougars

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's soccer team won, 3-1, against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Chatham University at home on Friday.

Westminster (3-3, 3-3 PAC) fell behind Chatham (0-6, 0-6 PAC) when the Cougars scored the first goal of the contest in the 26th minute off a through ball from their own back line to take a 1-0 lead. In danger of trailing at intermission, Westminster responded when first-year David Stuebgen (Freedom, PA / Ambridge Area) corralled a deflection off the Chatham goalkeeper and fired a shot into the back of the net with just 18 seconds remaining in the half to make it 1-1 at intermission.

In the second half, the Titans seized momentum when senior Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) was granted a corner and delivered a ball into the box, where junior Adam Saunders (Ellwood City, PA / Riverside) collected it after a scramble and kicked it out to classmate Michael Roman (Norristown, PA / Germantown Academy) who fired a left footed shot into the net to give the Titans the lead. Westminster collected an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when Iregui got past the back line, hit the post and sophomore Payton Goodwin (Pittsburgh, PA / Plum) buried the rebound to seal the victory for the Titans.

Westminster outshot the Cougars (16-7) and bested them in shots on goal (8-3). Westminster also held the edge in corner kicks (7-1).

Iregui had a pair of assists on the evening to match Stuebgen, Roman and Goodwin in points. Sophomore goalkeeper Jad Jadallah (Canfield, OH / Canfield) earned the win after earning a pair of saves in a complete-game effort.

Westminster will return to the pitch on Tuesday, April 13 when it takes on Saint Vincent College in a PAC matchup in Latrobe. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
