Baseball: Titans Drop Two Against Undefeated W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster baseball team lost both games in their home doubleheader against Washington & Jefferson on Sunday.

Washington & Jefferson (12-0, 10-0 PAC), who was receiving votes in a latest national poll, jumped out early in game one with a four-run first inning. Titan junior Dawson Porter (Kittanning, PA / Armstrong) immediately cut the Presidents' lead in the bottom half of the first with a two-run home run for his team-leading second homer of the season. W&J, however extended its lead with two runs in each the third and fourth inning to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Junior James Diamond (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) brought Westminster within four runs (8-4) in the eighth with a two-run triple (the first of his career). Down 10-4 in their last at bat, the Titans scored twice more but could not overcome the deficit. Junior pitcher Logan Minch (Grove City, PA / Grove City Area) (0-2) got the start for the Titans and threw 3.0 innings, giving up six runs (three earned) and walking one.

Westminster (4-8, 2-7 PAC) responded in game two with a comfortable 4-0 lead going into the fifth inning. Junior Seth Schrader (Fredonia, NY / Fredonia) connected on the first home run of his career with a two-run shot in the first inning and first-year Cooper Krawczyk (Lewiston, NY / Lewiston-Porter) registered a two-run double, the first extra-base hit of his career, in the third. W&J, however, rallied with five runs in the fifth, which proved to be in final inning due the game being called because of darkness. W&J's Dan Beistel drew a walk, scoring the eventual game-winning run. Titan senior pitcher Garvey Biggers (Phoenix, AZ / Valley Lutheran) got the loss, giving up the W&J's last run. First-year Timothy Lewis (Southwest Harbor, ME / Wilmington Area) had a solid start on the mound for Westminster, pitching the first four innings, only giving up two runs off three hits and striking out three.

Westminster is back in action with a home doubleheader with Waynesburg on Thursday, April 1. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
