NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's soccer team lost, 4-2, against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Washington and Jefferson College in their season-opener at the new UPMC Sports Complex on Saturday.
Westminster (0-1) struck first in the 12
th minute, when senior
Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) took a corner kick that found junior
Michael Roman (Fort Washington, PA / Germantown Academy), who scored off a diving header to give Westminster a 1-0 lead. With the assist, Iregui tied the school's career points record held by Titan Hall of Famer Matt Roser (2000-03) with his 98
th point. W&J (1-0) answered with two consecutive goals to end the first half and took a 2-1 lead into intermission.
The Titans came out strong again in the early stages of the second half, as first-year
Kai Haseyama (Encinitas, CA / San Dieguito Academy) scored his first career goal off of an assist by junior
Sam Accordino (Canfield, OH / Canfield) off a throw-in to knot the game up at 2-2 in the 64
th minute. The Presidents responded with two consecutive goals in the next 10 minutes to take the lead and secure the win.
First-year goalkeeper
Shadi Hassan (DuBois, PA / DuBois Area) earned four saves in the complete-game effort in his first collegiate contest.
The Titans and Presidents matched in shots with 12 apiece, while W&J narrowly held the edge in corner kicks (4-3).
Westminster will return to the pitch on Saturday, March 20 when it takes on Bethany College in a conference matchup on the road. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
