Softball: Titans Sweep Bearcats in Home Opener, Remain Unbeaten

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team swept the Saint Vincent College Bearcats on Saturday to remain undefeated on the season in the first contest at the brand-new Titan Softball Field. The Titans both games by mercy rule, winning game one by a score of 11-3 in six innings and claimed game two, 11-2 in five innings.

In game one, Westminster (6-0) struck first with a four-spot in the first inning, with the big blow coming at the hands of first-year Riley Lewis' (Clinton, PA / Hopewell) three-RBI double. Saint Vincent (1-3) kept within striking distance through five innings, only trailing 6-3. However, the Titans again utilized the big inning with a five-run sixth, highlighted by the first home run at to be hit at the new softball field by sophomore Ashley Wire (Poland, OH / Poland Seminary) to induce the mercy rule.

In game two, the Bearcats started off strong, putting up two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. However, Westminster quickly erased the deficit, plating five runs in the second inning and six runs in the fourth inning to slam the door shut and pick up the sweep.

Wire paced Westminster in game one with a career- and game-high three base hits and three runs scored to go along with her home run. Five other Titans had two-hit games, led by Lewis who also totaled a game-high three RBIs. Seniors Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell) and Victoria Pezzuolo (New Castle, PA / Hopewell) and sophomores Alexis Yates (Oakdale, PA / South Fayette), Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) and Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel) also egistered two base knocks, while Bedalota, Pancake and Atkins each scored two runs. Junior Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) got the complete-game win in the circle after she tossed six innings, scattered seven hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out three.

Pancake led the way in game two with two hits and three RBIs (both tied a game-high). Pezzuolo and Lewis each earned two hits. First-year Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City) snagged the complete-game win, logging five innings, giving up five hits, two runs and striking out two. Malczak also tied a game-high with three RBIs at the plate, all coming on a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

Westminster will be back in action on Wednesday, March 17 when it travels to West Virginia to take on the Bethany College Bison in a road doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
