NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season following a 65-58 win at home against Waynesburg University Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) led the Titans with 16 points, to go along with a game-high four assists and five rebounds. Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Week sophomore
Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) also scored in double-digits with 12. Sophomore
Camden Hergenrother (Salem, OH / Cardinal Mooney) added nine points, to go along with eight rebounds, and had a game-high plus-minus of +11. Sophomore
Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, OH / Ursuline) provided a spark off the bench with a career-day with career-highs in points (7) and rebounds (team-high 10).
Westminster led the entire first quarter with its largest lead of 18-10, following a three by Murrio, and the score remained the same after one. Waynesburg (0-2) cut the Titans' lead to 23-20 with 6:57 left, however, Westminster took its first double-digit lead of the game, following a 7-0 run, at 30-20 after a jumper by Bell. Elizabeth Trump (Fredericktown, PA / Bethlehem-Center) gave the Titans their largest lead of 37-26 with 1:23 on the clock, while classmate
Katie Fitzpatrick (Cumberland Center, ME / Greely) made a layup with 25 seconds left to tie Westminster's largest lead at 39-28 – which the Titans held at intermission.
The Titans shot out of the gates to start the second half with a 10-0 run, capped off by a fastbreak-layup by Murrio, and led 49-28 less than three minutes into the third. Senior
Ashley Russell (Belle Vernon, PA / Belle Vernon) gave Westminster its largest lead of the game (53-30) with a jumper with 5:59 left. Westminster maintained its double-digit lead and led 56-46 after three quarters of play. The Yellow Jackets managed to get within six points (60-54) with 4:39 left in the game, but that would be closest they would get for the remainder of the contest.
Fitzpatrick and Russell each had six points, while Fitzpatrick also had four boards. Junior
Megan Meyer (New Galilee, PA / Mohawk) registered five rebounds and two points. First-year
Alyssa Pollice (Pittsburgh, PA / Bishop Canevin) contributed with four points and three rebounds.
Westminster had the advantage in second chance-points (17-8) and bench points (20-2) – led by Bell with her aforementioned seven.
Waynesburg's Andrea Orlosky earned a double-double with game-highs in points (26) and rebounds (15).
The Titans will play at new PAC member Franciscan University for Westminster's first road game of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 10. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
