NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster women's basketball team finished the 2021 year with a strong non-conference win at home against Alfred University, 67-46. Junior
Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, OH / Ursuline) registered a career-high 26 points, to go along with 14 rebounds, (both game-highs) for the fifth career double-double of her career and third this season.
Alfred (5-4) started off the game with back-to-back threes to take an early 6-0 lead. Westminster (4-5) took its first lead, 10-8, following a jumper by Bell at the 4:52 mark. Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) made a jumper off an assist from first-year
Mackenzie Powell (Harrison City, PA / Penn-Trafford) with 6:54 left in the second quarter. Westminster maintained its double-digit lead for the rest of the frame and led 35-21. The Saxons fought back in the second half, cutting Westminster's lead to single-digits (44-36) with 2:39 remaining. The Titans led, 48-40, after three. Westminster regained its double-digit lead to start the fourth and did not look back, outscoring Alfred 19-6 for the frame. The Titans' final points of the contest, courtesy of a layup by Murrio, gave Westminster its largest lead of the contest – the final score of 67-46.
Joining Bell in the double-digit points for the Titans were junior
Camden Hergenrother (Salem, OH / Cardinal Mooney) and Murrio with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Hergenrother was two assists away from a double-double of her own with a game- and a season-high eight. Murrio added five rebounds, four assists, and a game-high two blocks.
For the game, Westminster outshot Alfred with a season-high 51.9% (28-54) to 22.1 % (17-77) and held the rebound advantage at 48-44.
The Titans' next scheduled game is set for Thursday, Jan. 6 against Chatham at 6 p.m. Westminster's originally scheduled game versus Franciscan for Tuesday, Jan. 4 has been postponed and is rescheduled for Monday, Jan. 17 with a 5:30 p.m. start.
