NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster women's basketball team lost a close bout to Washington and Jefferson, 60-59, in their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at home on Wednesday.
In the first quarter, Washington and Jefferson (4-2, 1-0 PAC) got an early 6-2 lead on the Titans 46 seconds into the game. Westminster (2-2, 0-1 PAC) eventually took the lead following junior
Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) scoring four points and classmate
Camden Hergenrother (Salem, OH / Cardinal Mooney) making a three to make it 9-6 with seven minutes to go. The Titans extend their lead to 16-10. The Presidents, however, finished the first quarter on a 7-0 run to retake the lead, 17-16, to lead after one quarter of play. The Presidents come out hot extending their lead to 22-16 to start the second quarter. Westminster started fighting back to cut the Presidents' lead down to one (27-26). Washington and Jefferson had a nine-point, 37-28 lead at halftime.
The Titans came out with determination in the second half, cutting the Presidents' lead to 40-37. The two teams would go back and forth, but Washington and Jefferson kept a 48-47 lead going into the fourth quarter. Westminster had the momentum as it took a 56-52 lead with 4:28 left in the game. The Presidents battled back and tied the game at 59 with 19 seconds remaining. Washington and Jefferson took advantage of a Westminster foul as Meghan Dryburgh made a game-winning free throw with less than a second left.
The Titans were led by Murrio who registered 19 points, four rebounds and two assists. Hergenrother tallied 14 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Senior
Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) scored 13 points, to go along with team-highs in rebounds (6), assists (4), and steals (2).
For the game, Westminster outshot, W&J 44.4% (24-54) to 35.1% (20-57).
The Titans are back in action Saturday, December 4, as they travel to Greenville to take on the Thiel Tomcats. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
