NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster football team scored 56 unanswered points to win, 66-14, over Waynesburg on Homecoming Saturday afternoon.
 
Titan junior kicker Joshua Byers (Pittsburgh, PA / Canon McMillan) put the first points on the board with a 27-yard field goal and Westminster (4-2, 4-1 PAC) led 3-0 with 8:58 to play in the first quarter. The score remained the same after the first frame.
 
Waynesburg (1-5, 1-4 PAC) opened the second quarter with a touchdown, off a 1-yard run by Josh Gibbons, and led 7-3 with 14:56 on the clock. The Yellow Jackets attempted to extend their lead on their next possession, however, Titan first-year defensive back Kevin Wright (West Palm Beach, FL / Seminole Ridge) had other plans picking off a pass in the end zone. The interception set up the Titans' go-ahead score as junior Ryan Gomes (Tampa, FL / Walter L. Sickles) found day light for a 62-yard touchdown run – the longest of his career and for the Titans this season.
 
First-year defensive back Brice Butler (Farrell, PA / Farrell) extended Westminster's lead to 17-7 with his second pick-six of the season, this time from 48 yards out. Titan sophomore Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) blocked Waynesburg's punt late in the second quarter to set up the Titans' last touchdown of the half as senior quarterback Cole Konieczka (Coraopolis, PA / Moon Area) connected with sophomore wide receiver Tylon Eilam (Sharon, PA / Sharon Area) for a 31-yard strike. Titans led 24-7 at halftime.
 
Junior Luca Botti (Ellwood City, PA / Ellwood City Youngstown State) returned the opening second half kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown and just like that the Titans led 31-7. Randza proved again his hands are not just for catching as he blocked another punt to set up another Titan touchdown as Konieczka found Eilam again – this time a perfectly thrown ball over the defender from seven yards out.
 
Junior running back Vincent Giles (Lexington Park, MD / Great Mills) scored back-to-back rushing touchdowns and the Titans led 52-7 with still 5:43 to play in the third quarter.
 
Botti almost found paydirt again on Waynesburg's ensuing drive as he picked off Josh Gibbons's pass and returned it to the 2-yard line. Two plays later, senior Isiah Canton (Pittsburgh, PA / Carlynton) ran it in, capping off 56 unanswered points. The Titans led 59-7 at the end of three.
 
Titan junior Kevin Brown (Pittsburgh PA / Plum Senior) got in on the scoring fun as he returned a punt 40 yards, breaking multiple tackles along the way, for a touchdown.
 
Gomes ran for a game- and career-high 99 yards off 11 carries, including a touchdown. Giles added two rushing touchdowns, followed by Canton with one.  Eilam had a team-high five catches for a game-high 111 receiving yards and two touchdowns – marking the third 100-yard receiving game and second multi-touchdown game of his career. Junior Nicholas Treloar (New Castle, PA / New Castle) led the defense with a game-high 11 tackles. The Westminster defense had a combined 14.0 tackles for a loss, the most in school history for a single game in over 15 years. Senior Tyree Reeder (Youngstown, OH / Ursuline) and junior Jarred Kohl (York, Pa / York Catholic) led the way with two tackles for a loss each.
 
At halftime, Westminster recognized members of the 1970 undefeated regular season National Champions and the 1971 undefeated regular season National Runners-up.
 
The Titans' 66 points were ten points shy of a school record (76 vs. Allegheny in 1904).
 
Westminster will next travel to play PAC foe No. 12 Washington and Jefferson on Saturday, October 23. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
