Women’s Basketball: Titans Fall to Grove City in PAC Semifinals

LATROBE, Pa. - The No. 3 seeded Westminster College women's basketball team fell to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe No. 2 seeded Grove City College by a score of 70-58 in a PAC Championship Tournament Semifinal matchup on Friday evening.
 
The Titans PAC tournament run came to an end after the Titans hit several accolades, including making it to the PAC Semifinals for the first time since the 2009-10 season and hitting the 20-win mark for only the third time in school history.
 
Westminster (20-7) got out of the gates hot on a 9-3 run just under four minutes into the game, capped off by a jumper by sophomore Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin). Grove City (24-2) responded with a 17-0 run spanning over five minutes to take a 20-11 lead with 1:38 left in the first quarter. The Wolverines led 23-13 after the first frame. In the second period, Grove City continued its hot streak, as it outscored the Titans 22-8 in the quarter to take a 45-21 lead at the halftime break.
 
In the third quarter, the Wolverines got their lead up to 56-27 with 4:55 left in the period. However, the Titans responded with a 9-2 run to close out the frame and cut Grove City's lead to 58-38 at the end of the third quarter. In the final frame, the Titans sparked a comeback and cut the Grove City lead to 64-50, capped off by a three-pointer by junior Alazia Greaves (West Sunbury, PA / Moniteau) with seven minutes remaining. The Titans got the deficit to as low as 12, but the clock turned out to be their worst enemy as time ran out and Grove City advanced to the PAC Championship game.
 
Westminster shot 33.9% from the floor (19-56) compared to Grove City's 41.4% (24-58). The Titans also shot 89.5% (17-19) from the free throw line. The Titans matched the Wolverines on the glass (37-37). Westminster also dished out 11 assists and pocketed seven steals.
 
Senior Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) led the way for Westminster, tying a game-high with 16 points and led with a game-high nine rebounds. Fromknecht was 5-for-10 from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Senior Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt matched Fromknecht with 16 points. Bennett also grabbed seven rebounds was 7-for-14 from the field. Greaves tallied nine points, grabbed four rebounds and tied a team-high with two steals.
