NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team lost, 88-78, to Saint Vincent College in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Quarterfinals at home Tuesday evening.
Third-seed Westminster (15-11) responded to an opening three-pointer by sixth-seed Saint Vincent (13-13) with a 7-0 run to lead 7-3 three minutes into the game. The Bearcats responded with a 5-0 run to take an 8-7 lead, however, the Titans answered with a 6-0 run for their largest lead of the half (13-8) with just under 14 minutes to go. Saint Vincent orchestrated a 9-4 run to tie the game at 17 with 12:29 left. Four lead changes ensued, followed by Saint Vincent taking a five-point, 30-25 lead. The Titans battled back with a 10-3 run, capped off by a jumper by senior Blake Payne (Ashtabula, OH / Jefferson Area), and led 35-33 with five minutes remaining. The Bearcats regrouped and took a lead they never lost, finishing the half strong with a seven-point, 48-41 advantage. Saint Vincent's junior David Stephen was the game's leading scorer at halftime with 25 points off 7-of-8 from three.
In the second half, Saint Vincent took its first double-digit lead of 58-48 four minutes into the frame. The Titans gained momentum off a 7-0 run, capped off by a Payne dunk, cutting Saint Vincent's lead to 58-55 with 14 minutes left. That, however, would be the closest the Titans would get for the remainder of the contest. Saint Vincent took its largest lead of the game at 80-66. A three by Titan junior Isaac Stamatiades (Elkridge, MD / Avalon) with 1:25 left brought Westminster within eight points (84-76), however, the deficit proved too much to overcome.
Stamatiades led the way for Westminster with a career-high 35 points (15-of-26), tied for the second-most points by any PAC player this season. Stamatiades, who made a career-high five threes, also grabbed down a game-high 14 rebounds to collect his league-leading 12th double-double of the season. Senior Dylan O'Hara (Girard, OH / Girard) finished with 21 points. Senior Blake Payne (Ashtabula, OH / Jefferson Area) recorded 12 points and earned six rebounds, while classmate Ricky Roth (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) dished out a game-high seven assists (tying a career-high).
Westminster out-rebounded Saint Vincent, 36-30. The Bearcats outshot the Titans, 59.6% (34-57) (a conference-best this season) to 42.6% (29-68).
