NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team fell to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College by a score of 79-76 at home on Wednesday evening.
Westminster (19-6, 12-4 PAC) and Grove City (22-2, 13-2 PAC) engaged in a tight defensive battle early, as both teams scored only six points combined through the first four opening minutes. The Wolverines held a 16-12 advantage after the first quarter. In the second frame, Grove City utilized a 16-4 run to take a 32-16 lead with 3:37 left in the first half. The Wolverines led 39-22 at halftime.
The Wolverines led 57-41 after three quarters. Trailing 61-43 with 8:55 left in the game, Westminster mounted a 14-0 run to drastically cut the Grove City lead to 61-57 with 3:09 left in the game. With 57 seconds remaining, Titan junior
Alazia Greaves (West Sunbury, PA / Moniteau) knocked down two free throws to make the score 63-63. Westminster got a stop on the next possession, but was unable to unable to convert on its possession with 29 seconds left. The Titans managed to keep Grove City off the scoreboard in the waning seconds and sent the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, Greaves knocked down three more free throws just under a minute into overtime to give the Titans their first lead of the contest at 66-63 with 4:12 left in the game. The Titans extended their lead to 71-67 when sophomore
Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) buried a three with 2:24 left. Grove City cut Westminster's lead to 74-73 with 1:02 remaining and reclaimed the lead after Emma Vezzosi hit a free throw and knocked down a three to give Grove City a 77-74 lead with 23 seconds remaining. The Wolverines held the lead for the remainder of the contest.
Greaves tied a career-high with 25 points and knocked down a career-high 12 free throws. The junior also had six rebounds and pocketed three steals. Senior
Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) recorded 18 points on a crisp 9-12 mark from the field to go along with 12 rebounds. This marked Bennett's seventh double-double of the season and the eight of her career. Bennett also tied for a game-high of four blocks with teammate senior
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell). First-year
Camden Hergenrother (Salem, OH / Cardinal Mooney) and Polczynski each contributed nine points, while Hergenrother had a game-high four steals.
Westminster will be back on the court next week for the PAC Tournament.
