NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team won, 73-58, over Waynesburg University in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
The first half went back-and-forth with three ties and five lead changes. Westminster (12-8, 7-4 PAC) was up 21-20 with 3:51 left, before closing out the half with its largest lead of the frame at 29-23. The Titans took their first double-digit lead (33-23) following a fastbreak-layup by senior Dylan O'Hara (Girard, OH / Girard) two minutes into the second half. The Titans had a 15-point, 45-30 lead before Waynesburg (4-16, 4-7 PAC) answered with a 13-5 run to cut the Titans' lead to seven (50-43) with eight minutes left. Westminster, however, did not let the Yellow Jackets get any closer the rest of the game and had its largest lead of the contest of 71-52 late in the contest.
O'Hara led the offensive charge with a game-high 29 points (11-of-17), including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. O'Hara added a season-high nine rebounds. Senior Blake Payne (Ashtabula, OH / Jefferson Area) and junior Josh Hutcherson (Uniontown, OH / Uniontown Lake) both scored in double-digits with 11 and 10 points each, respectively. Junior Isaac Stamatiades (Elkridge, MD / Avalon) and freshman Austin O'Hara (Girard, OH / Girard) both added six points. Stamatiades crashed the glass with a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior Preston Stitt (Boardman, OH / South Range) tied a career-high with a game-best six assists.
For the game, Westminster outshot Waynesburg 42.6% (26-61) to 41.7% (20-48) and held a 36-30 advantage in rebounds. The Titans scored 24 points off of 21 Waynesburg turnovers, registered 22 fastbreak-points, and had 25 points coming off the bench (led by Hutcherson's 10).
The Titans are back on the court Wednesday, Feb. 5 with a road trip to PAC foe Washington & Jefferson College with an 8 p.m. tip-off.
