Softball: Titans Defeat W&J in Extras, Split Doubleheader

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team split a doubleheader at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday. The Titans won the first game, 2-1, in 10 innings and lost game two, 2-1.

In game one, Washington & Jefferson (14-14, 5-3 PAC) led off the bottom of the first with a triple followed by a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead early. The Presidents held Westminster (10-16, 3-7 PAC) without a hit until Titan junior Lauren McNany (Emlenton, PA / Allegheny-Clarion Valley) doubled with two outs in the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh, the Titans were still down 1-0 and down to their final out when senior Cheyenne Shifflett (Etters, PA / Trinity) reached base (first-year Krystyna Burdelski (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel) pinch-ran and stole second), then McNany drove Burdelski home with an RBI-single to force extra-innings. In the top of the tenth inning, Titan sophomore Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell) hit a one-out single, followed by a stolen base then advancing to third base on a wild pitch. Sophomore Ashley Chorney (Indian Trail, NC / Porter Ridge) drove home Bedalota on a sacrifice fly, for the game-winning run. The Titans held Washington & Jefferson hitless from the sixth inning on. Titan first-year pitcher Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) earned her fifth win of the season in a complete game effort, allowing just one run on four hits and one walk, while striking out seven over ten innings. Brown also added a hit in the contest. McNany finished with a career-high three hits while also recording the game-tying RBI. Sophomore Alexis Brinza (McKees Rocks, PA / Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) finished with two hits. Bedalota also recorded two hits and added a stolen base.

In game two, the Titans got on the scoreboard first with an RBI-single by Brown who drove in Bedalota to put the Titans up 1-0. The lead stood until Washington & Jefferson rallied in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Burdelski pitched a complete game, allowing only two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three. Bedalota recorded two hits and a run, extending her hit streak to five games. Bedalota also has a run in every game over that span and a hit in seven of the last eight games. Brown reached base twice with a hit and walk, as well as an RBI. Brown also extended her hit streak to five games and has a hit in ten of the last 11 games.

The Titans will be in action next at home for a doubleheader against PAC foe Chatham University on Tuesday, April 16 with game one starting at 3:30 p.m.
