Men’s Lacrosse: Titans Begin 2019 Season with Win at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Westminster College men's lacrosse team won, 13-8, in their season opener at Heidelberg University on Saturday.
 
Heidelberg (0-1) had an early 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Westminster (1-0) outscored the Student Princes, 4-0, in the second and led 4-2 at halftime. Junior Adrian Culp (Gaithersburg, MD / Quince Orchard) scored the first Titan goal (man-up) with 12:09 on the clock. Freshman Joe Rosa (Newton, NJ / Kittatinny Regional) netted the next two (7:28, 4:18), while senior Ryan Shorts (Westlake Village, CA / Oak Park) earned the fourth goal. In the third quarter, the Titans went on a 5-1 run to take a commanding 9-3 lead with 5:02 left (Rosa led the offensive charge two more goals). The Titans took their largest lead of the game (11-4) when sophomore Shane Fisher (Palm Harbor, FL / East Lake) scored his second goal of the game with 1:21 left in the third. Heidelberg got within four points of Westminster's lead as it scored three-straight goals going into the top of the fourth quarter. Both teams scored two goals in the fourth quarter with both Titan goals coming from Rosa.
 
Rosa totaled a game-high six goals in his collegiate debut. Shorts and Fisher each had two goals. Culp and juniors Tyler Nordby (Burnt Hills, NY / Burnt Hills) and Dante Serra (Center Valley, PA / Southern Lehigh) each had a goal. Serra also dished out a game-best four assists.
 
Titan senior goalkeeper Carter Hall (Zeeland, MI / Zeeland West) tied a game-high with eight saves in a complete game effort. Hall was also one of five Titans with four ground balls. Sophomore Jack Granahan (Aldie, VA / John Champe), senior Matt Trella (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area), and freshman Mike Roman (Fort Washington, PA / Germantown Academy) each caused two turnovers.
 
Westminster outshot Heidelberg, 40-29. The Student Princes held an advantage in ground balls (45-40) and face-offs (16-9). The Titans were 3-for-6 in extra man opportunities.
 
The Titans will next play at the University of Mount Union Saturday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m.
