Women’s Lacrosse: Mount St. Joseph Edges Titans, 13-11

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Westminster College women's lacrosse team fell to Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) opponent Mount St. Joseph University, 13-11, on the road Saturday afternoon.
 
Mount St. Joseph (3-6, 2-2 ORLC) started the game on a 4-0 run, capped off by Kara Marshall at the 24:45 mark of the first half. Westminster (2-5, 2-2 ORLC) got on the board at the 23:33 mark off the stick of sophomore Michaela Hays (Blairsville, PA / Blairsville), cutting the Lion lead, 4-1. Mount St. Joseph would answer with a goal 20 seconds later (5-1), however, Westminster went on a 3-0 run, starting at the 19-minute mark in the first-half from senior Sarah Nutter (Pittsburgh, PA / North Hills) and ending with 13:57 left in the half with a goal by Hays (5-4). First-year Marisa Keller (Canonsburg, PA / Canon-McMillan) notched the second goal. With 7:29 left to go in the first, Nutter scored her second goal of the game to cut the Lion lead, 7-5. Mount St. Joseph would end the first-half with a 9-6 lead.
 
Sophomore Bria Braddock (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) opened the second half scoring with a goal at the 25:42 mark (9-7). Down 11-8 with 15 minutes to go, Westminster scored two unanswered goals from each junior Emily D'Amico (Moon Township, PA / Moon Area) (14:19) and Braddock (13:09), making the score 11-10. After a Lion goal from Brianna Brannon (12-10), Keller scored with 7:41 left in the game to cut the Lion lead to one (12-11). Mount St. Joseph would score with less than three minutes to play (13-11) and held off the Titans the rest of the way.
 
Braddock and Keller each recorded three goals. Braddock registered a career- and team-high nine caused turnovers and finished with a career- and game-high 10 ground balls, while registering a game-high six draw controls. Keller recorded a career-high six caused turnovers. Nutter and Hays each netted two goals. First-year Matalyn Holland (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler Area) totaled 10 saves in a complete-game effort. Holland is four saves away from the school record, set last year by Jesse Reichard (68).
 
Westminster is back in action Tuesday, April 10 on the road at conference opponent Waynesburg University. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
