NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team swept Waynesburg University in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at home Wednesday afternoon.
Westminster (11-5, 2-0 PAC) won game one, 5-1, and defeated the Yellow Jackets (7-9, 0-2 PAC) 4-2 in game two. Westminster extends its winning-streak to nine games.
In game one, the Yellow Jackets got on the board first in the top of the fourth off the bat of Rachel Skon, giving Waynesburg a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the fourth, junior
Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. First-year Breanna Tetirick (New Concord, OH / John Glenn) reached first on a fielder's choice (advancing Liverman to third) and senior
Jazmyn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove) reached first base with an infield single, setting up senior
Nikki Anderson (Oakmont, PA / Riverview) for a chance to give Westminster its first lead. Anderson did just that, cranking a grand slam to left center field, giving the Titans a 4-1 lead. The home run was Anderson's first of her career.
In the bottom of the sixth, Rohrer doubled to right center field, bringing in Liverman and extending the Titan lead, 5-1. Westminster would win by that same score. Rohrer pitched a complete-game, giving up seven hits and one earned run. Rohrer also tied a career-high 12 strikeouts, the third-time she has done so this season. Anderson finished 1-for-3 with one run and tied a career-high four RBIs. Liverman finished 1-for-2 with one walk and a double. The double was number 38 for her career, breaking the all-time school record for career doubles.
The Yellow Jackets would strike first again in the top of the fourth inning of game two, scoring two runs to lead, 2-0. Anderson's bat would continue to drive in runs as she reduced the Yellow Jacket lead (2-1) with a single to right field in the bottom of the fourth. In the next at-bat, senior
Hannah Ritter (Front Royal, VA / Skyline) would reach on an error and advanced all the way to third base, scoring Anderson and tying the game, 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth, senior
Addie Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) led off the inning with a double. In the next at-bat, Liverman gave Westminster its first lead of the game with a two-run home run to left center field.
Westminster would hold off Waynesburg the rest of the way. Rohrer earned the win, her ninth of the season, by pitching three innings, giving up no hits and striking out three. Ritter pitched four innings, giving up two earned runs. Anderson finished 2-for-2 with one run and one walk, while Liverman finished 1-for-3 with one run and two RBIs.
Westminster is back in action Wednesday, April 4 on the road for a doubleheader at conference opponent Thiel College. Game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
