WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team lost, 88-86, at Waynesburg University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets erased a double-digit lead the Titans owned with less than eight minutes remaining in the game.
Junior
Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North) led Westminster with a career-high 25 points (8-of-10), including 7-for-9 from three-point range (which also set a new career best).
Westminster (15-6, 9-5 PAC) led for the first part of the first half and led by as much as six points (15-9) with 14:11 on the clock. Waynesburg (8-13, 4-10 PAC) took its first lead, 20-19, of the game after Jon Knab made a jumper with 10 minutes remaining. There would be 11 lead changes that ensued, with the 11
th coming when Armwood made a three with 4:34 remaining, putting the Titans in front 36-35. Westminster led 44-41 at intermission. In the second half, the Titans opened with an 18-6 run to take a commanding 62-47 lead, their largest of the game, following a three by sophomore
Lloyd Chatman (Columbus, OH / Reynoldsburg) with 14:32 left. The Yellow Jackets answered with a 13-2 run, cutting the Titans' lead to 64-60 with 10:42 on the clock. Westminster would lead by 10 points on three different occasions, with the latest coming at the 7:41 mark (77-67). Waynesburg continued to battle and took an 86-84 lead after Matt Popeck made a three with 39 seconds remaining. Titan sophomore
Cameron Kane-Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles) tied the game at 86 with a layup with 10 seconds remaining, however, Waynesburg quickly drove down the court and scored the game-winner as Frank Bozicevic found Marcus Wallace for layup.
Three other Titans scored in double digits, including Kane-Johnson (19), senior
Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) (16), and senior
Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) (12). Scott registered his eighth double-double of the season and 27
th of his career as he grabbed a game- and season-high 13 rebounds. Kane-Johnson also had six boards. Chatman added seven points.
Waynesburg outshot Westminster, 50.8% (32-63) to 49.2% (29-59), however, the Titans dominated the glass outrebounding the Yellow Jackets, 40-24.
The Titans will next host Thomas More College, who currently sits first in the PAC standings, Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m.
