Men’s Basketball: Titans Drop First PAC Contest to Waynesburg

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team lost, 81-75, at home to Waynesburg University in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Wednesday night.
 
Waynesburg (3-5, 2-1 PAC) led the entire first half and took its first double-digit lead with 10:16 on the clock (23-12). Westminster (4-5, 2-1 PAC) kept battling and got within single-digits of the Yellow Jackets' lead (39-30) after a three-pointer by senior Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North) with 1:57 remaining. The Titans finished the first half strong with a 12-0 run, capped off with a layup by sophomore Isaac Stamatiades (Elkridge, MD / Avalon), to cut Waynesburg's lead to 39-37 with 23 seconds left. The Yellow Jackets led 41-37 at intermission.
 
The Titans took their first lead of the game when Armwood found junior Dylan O'Hara (Girard, OH / Girard) for a three, putting Westminster up, 47-46, at the 14:09 mark in the second half. Westminster had its largest lead of four points (50-46) when senior African Grant II (Warren, OH / Warren JFK) split a pair of free throws, completing an 8-0 Titan run, with 12:14 left. 11 lead changes followed with the latest at the 6:26 mark when Waynesburg went up 64-63. The Titans tied the game (67-67) and got within one point of Waynesburg's lead three times, but were unable to regain the lead.
 
Three Titans scored in double-digits, led by Armwood who scored a season-high 18 points. Stamatiades earned a season-high 11 points, while junior Blake Payne (Ashtabula, OH / Jefferson Area) netted 10. Junior Dylan O'Hara (Girard, OH / Girard) added nine points, while sophomore Anthony Ritter (North Lima, OH / South Range) had seven. Grant II dominated the glass with a game- and career-high 13 rebounds – 11 of which came in the first half. Grant also tied a game-high with a career-high four assists, to go along with a game-high three blocks (tying a career-best). O'Hara also had double-digit rebounds with 10, while Stamatiades added seven.
 
Waynesburg outshot Westminster 41.5% (27-65) to 34.7% (26-75). The Titans held a 49-47 advantage in rebounds.
 
The Titans will next play at PAC foe Washington & Jefferson College Saturday, December 15 at 3 p.m.
