Men’s Basketball: Late Clutch Shooting Lifts Titans Past Chatham in PAC Opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team won, 68-63, over Chatham University in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at home Wednesday evening.
 
Chatham (3-2, 0-1 PAC) led for the majority of the first half and had its largest lead of 18-9 with 11:38 remaining. Westminster (3-4, 1-0 PAC) responded with 7-0 run, capped off with a three-pointer by junior Lloyd Chatman (Columbus, OH / Reynoldsburg), cutting the Cougars' lead to 18-16 with 8:08 on the clock. Chatham remained in front and led, 34-31, at halftime. In the second half, Westminster took its first lead (39-38), since the opening minutes of the game, when junior Dylan O'Hara (Girard, OH / Girard) found sophomore Anthony Ritter (North Lima, OH / South Range) for a three with 14:40 on the clock. The Titans had their largest lead of 43-38 after sophomore Isaac Stamatiades (Elkridge, MD / Avalon) made a layup less than two minutes later. The Cougars retook the lead (48-47) with 9:25 left and held a five-point lead (58-53) with 5:05 remaining. The Titans stormed back with a 6-0 run, capped off with a traditional three-point play by senior African Grant II (Warren, OH / Warren JFK) to put Westminster back in front,59-58,with 2:36 left. Four lead changes ensued with the last come coming in favor of the Titans as senior Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North) found O'Hara for a three, putting Westminster up 65-63 with 22 seconds left. Grant made a pair of clutch free throws making it a two-possession game (67-63) with 10 seconds remaining.
O'Hara notched his second-straight double-double as he scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed a game- and career-high 11 rebounds, to go along with a team-high two steals. Grant II scored a season-high 15 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Grant II also tied a season-high with eight rebounds. Armwood and Chatman each had eight points (season-high for Chatman). Sophomore Isaac Stamatiades (Elkridge, MD / Avalon) added six rebounds, to go along with four points.
 
Westminster outshot Chatham 40.7% (24-59) to 39.0% (23-59). For the second-straight game, the Titans dominated on the glass with a 50-29 advantage over the Cougars.
 
The Titans will next play at Thiel College Saturday December 1 with a 3 p.m. start time.
