Volleyball: Titans Advance Past Geneva to PAC Finals with 30th Win of the Year

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The top-seeded Westminster College volleyball team won, 3-2, over fourth-seeded Geneva College in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Semifinals at home Friday night.

The Titans improved to 30-2 overall, becoming only the fourth team in school history to win 30 matches in a single season (second year in a row). Geneva dropped to 19-12 overall.

Westminster held a 13-9 lead in the first set, however, Geneva responded with a 6-0 run and led 15-13. Both teams kept battling and the Titans regained the lead (20-18) after a kill by first-year Becky Adelman (Mogadore, OH / Waterloo). The Golden Tornadoes once again answered with a run (6-0) to take a 24-20 lead. The Titans managed to score two more points, but Geneva took set one, 25-22. Westminster was in front for the majority of the second set. Geneva cut Westminster's lead to 18-15, however, that would be the closest the Golden Tornadoes would get as the Titans won set two 25-18. The first half of set three was back-and-forth and the frame was knotted up at 10. The Titans started to pull away with a 4-0 run, capped off with a kill by senior Delaney Saxton (Cortland, OH / Brookfield). Westminster maintained the lead and went up 2-1 with a 25-21 set three victory. Geneva led the entire fourth set and won 25-20, forcing a match-deciding fifth set. In the fifth frame, Geneva held an early 2-1 lead. The Titans answered with an 8-0 run, capped off with another kill by Saxton, and led 9-2. Westminster remained in front and did not let Geneva get any closer than four points for the remainder of the set and won the match with a 15-9 fifth-set victory.

Saxton and senior Shanna Daniels (Hermitage, PA / Billy C. Ryan) both etched their names in the school's record books. Saxton notched her 1,000th career kill, only the 10th Titan to ever achieve this milestone (she totaled 17 kills on Friday), while Daniels dished out her 2,000th career assist, only the 10th Titan to ever do so, as she led the Titans with 28 on the night.

Junior Reilly DeGeorge (Ashtabula, OH / Saint John) led all attackers with a career-high 24 kills, to go along with 23 digs. First-year Maya Steward (Los Angeles, CA / William Howard Taft) added 15 kills. First-year Samantha Kelly (Irwin, PA / Penn-Trafford) added 23 assists. Senior Rachel Moore (Greensburg, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) led the Titan defense with 27 digs, followed by Kelly (career-high 24), Daniels (18), senior Mackensie Garris (Meadville, PA / Saegertown) (11), and junior junior Haley Farmerie (Manor, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) (10). Adelman added a match-high five blocks, while sophomore Josie Toporcer (Warren, OH / Lordstown) had three.

The Titans will play third-seeded Bethany College, who topped second-seeded Washington & Jefferson College, 3-1, in the second Semifinal, for a chance for their fourth PAC title in program history.
