CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Westminster College men's soccer team fell to Capital University, 4-1, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship on Saturday afternoon.
Westminster finished the season with a 14-6 overall record. Capital improved to 15-4 overall on the season. Westminster's trip to the NCAA Tournament was the fifth in school history (2002, 2004, 2008, 2015). The game was held at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.
Capital scored first in the 12
th minute off the foot of Greg Knox to give the Crusaders an early 1-0 advantage. In the 34
th minute, junior
Peter Mattocks (Saegertown, PA / Saegertown) recovered a loose ball in the middle of the box and connected with the lower right of the goal, tying the game at one. The goal was Mattocks's 11
th of the season. The score would stay the same at halftime.
In the 58
th minute of the second half, Capital scored its second goal of the contest off a penalty kick from Daniel Bundschuh, giving the Crusaders a 2-1 advantage. Six minutes later (64:48), Capital scored its third goal (Nick Scharfenberger) to extend its lead, 3-1. The Crusaders scored their last goal in the 79
th minute from Tyler Wujczyk (4-1).
Mattocks finished the game with five shots and two shots on goal. Senior
Shane Fallen (Blue Bell, PA / Wissahickon) registered four shots and two shots on goal, while sophomore
Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) totaled three shots and two shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
AJ Bove (New Stanton, PA / Hempfield Area) tallied four saves in 84 minutes of work. Junior
Ezra Cimino (Brookline, MA / Waldorf) recorded six minutes between the pipes.
Westminster outshot Capital, 17-14, including 7-5 on goal. Capital led in corner kicks, 8-6.
