Women’s Basketball: W&J Finishes Strong, Tops Titans

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 62-42, at Washington & Jefferson College in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Wednesday evening.
 
Westminster (7-13, 3-10 PAC) only trailed once in the first seven and a half minutes of the first quarter. The Titans led 10-7 with 2:34 left in the first after senior Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) converted on a traditional three-point play. Washington & Jefferson (17-3, 11-2 PAC), however, outscored the Titans, 12-2, for the remainder of the frame and led 19-12 at the end of one. The Presidents maintained their lead in the second quarter and took their first double-digit lead (26-16) with 4:55 left. W&J's largest lead of the half was 33-21, coming at 1:52. The Presidents led 34-25 at halftime. The Titans opened the second half with a 6-0 run, capped off with a pair of free throws by first-year Alazia Greaves (West Sunbury, PA / Moniteau), to cut W&J's lead to 34-31 with 6:28 remaining. The Presidents did not let Westminster get any closer as it answered with an 11-1 run with 55 seconds left and held a 47-36 at the end of three. The Presidents maintained their double-digit lead in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Titans, 15-6.
 
Greaves led the Titans with eight points. Cook added seven points, while junior Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) and sophomore Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) each had six. Senior Kristine Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) led Westminster on the glass with 10 rebounds, her third double-digit rebound output this season. E. Fromknecht grabbed six boards. Cook and sophomore Francesca Sicari (Erie, PA / McDowell) both earned two assists, while Mathews, E. Fromknecht, and K. Fromknecht each had a block.
 
W&J shot 32.8% (22-67), compared to Westminster's 32.4% (12-37). The Presidents also held a slight 36-33 rebound advantage.
 
The Titans will next play at Waynesburg University in conference play Saturday, Feb. 3 with a 1:30 p.m. start time.
