NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team won its third-straight game with its 61-49 victory over Chatham University in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action at home Wednesday night.
Westminster (7-11, 3-8 PAC) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the opening minutes after a three-pointer by both junior
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) and senior
Kristine Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell). The Titans were up 12-7 with 4:31 on the clock. Chatham (4-14, 2-9 PAC) responded with an 8-2 run to take its first lead of the game, 15-14, capped off with a three by Katie Sieg with 2:05 remaining. The game was tied at 18 at the end of one. Paige Quinn (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) with 2:27 to go. Westminster led 30-24 at halftime. The Titans maintained their lead in the third quarter and led by as much as 13 points, 43-30, which would be the same score at the end of three. Titan sophomore
Brooke Lyczek (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley) made a layup to start the fourth quarter, giving Westminster a 15-point lead (45-30). The Cougars orchestrated an 8-0 run, cutting the Titans' lead to 45-38 with 7:11 to play. Chatham got with six points of Westminster's lead (48-42), however that would be closest the Cougars would get for the remainder of the game.
Westminster outshot Chatham 46.8% (22-47) to 26.8% (19-71). The Cougars held a 42-39 advantage in rebounds.
Three Titans scored in double-digits, led by sophomore
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) with 14 points. Mathews registered 12 points, while Lyczek had 10. Mathews dished out a career-high seven assists, while tying a season-best with six rebounds. E. Fromknecht registered a game-high three blocks, totaling her career-high to 69 – good for third-place all-time in school history. K. Fromknecht and Mathews each had a team-best three steals. Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) led Westminster on the glass with seven rebounds, to go along with six points.
The Titans will next play at Bethany College Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m.
