BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team lost, 64-63, at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Geneva College in overtime Wednesday evening.
Geneva (8-8, 4-5 PAC) started the game with a 15-2 lead, after a 15-0 run, with 15:15 on the clock. The Golden Tornadoes had their largest lead of 16 points (26-10) with 8:42 remaining in the half. Westminster (12-4, 6-3 PAC) responded with a 10-0 run, capped off with a layup by sophomore
Blake Payne (Ashtabula, OH / Jefferson Area), cutting Geneva's lead to 26-20 with 4:57 left. The Titans were unable to get any closer for the rest of the half and Geneva led 30-24 at intermission.
In the second half, Geneva was up 40-32 with 15:35 to play, however, the Titans orchestrated an 11-2 run to take their first lead since the opening seconds, 43-42, after Payne converted on a traditional three-point play with 9:26 on the clock. Titan sophomore
Cameron Kane-Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles) made a three-pointer to tie the game at 46 with 8:05 remaining. Three minutes later, Kane-Johnson made another three, putting Westminster in front 50-48 with 5:06 left. After Geneva retook the lead, 51-50, with a three, Kane-Johnson nailed his fourth three-pointer of the half, putting Westminster ahead 53-51 with 4:09 left. The three would be part of a 6-0 run for the Titans and Westminster took its largest lead of the game (56-51) with 2:34 remaining. Geneva battled back and tied the game at 58 after David Oliver made a three-pointer with 26 seconds left. Westminster had a chance for the game winner in regulation, but a shot came up short as time expired.
In extra minutes, Titan junior
Marco Delorenzo (Canfield, OH / Canfield) scored the first points of the frame, a three, and the Titans led 61-58 at the 3:40 mark. Both teams traded a layup and Westminster led 63-60 with 2:09 to go. Geneva would score the final four points from the free throw line to take a 64-63 lead with 34 seconds left. With under 20 seconds remaining, Westminster was unable to make back-to-back three-point attempts or get a shot off with less than a second remaining.
Kane-Johnson led all scorers with 22 points (7-of-14), while tying a career-high with a game-high five made threes – with four coming in the second half. Senior
Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) registered nine points and seven rebounds, while Payne had eight points and five boards. Senior
Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) added seven points and pocketed a team-high three steals. Delorenzo tied a career-high with a team-best eight rebounds, to go along with six points. Junior
Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North) dished out a team-high four assists.
Geneva outshot Westminster, 41.4% (24-58) to 37.1% (23-62), and held a slight advantage in rebounds, 40-39.
Westminster will next host Thiel College in a PAC matchup Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3:30 p.m.
