LATROBE, Pa. – The Westminster College volleyball team began its 2017 campaign with a sweep of two non-conference matches in day one of the Bearcat Challenge on Friday. Saint Vincent College is hosting the two-day event.
The Titans topped Franciscan University in their first match (3-0 (25-9, 25-23, 25-21)) and shut out La Roche College, (3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-20)), in their second contest. In the third set against the Barons, Westminster was down 20-19, however went on a 5-0 run, capped off with a service ace by senior
Kendell Dickson (Cochranton, PA / Cochranton), and led 24-20 before clinching the match. The Titans were down 19-17 in the final set against the Redhawks, but orchestrated a 7-0 run, which ended with a kill by senior
Lexie Yoho (Pittsburgh, PA / Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), to take a commanding 24-19 lead before sealing their second shutout for the day.
Against Franciscan, Yoho registered a game-high 11 kills. Dickson and junior
Delaney Saxton (Cortland, OH / Brookfield) each tallied seven kills. Yoho added a match-high three service aces and tied Saxton with a team-high two blocks. Junior
Shanna Daniels (Hermitage, PA / Billy C. Ryan) led the Titans with 18 assists. Junior
Rachel Moore (Greensburg, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) led the Titan defense, while tying a match-high with nine digs. Sophomore
Reilly DeGeorge (Ashtabula, OH / Saint John) added seven digs.
In Westminster's nightcap, DeGeorge earned a match-best nine kills. Yoho and Saxton contributed with eight and six kills, respectively. DeGeorge and Yoho tied a match-high with two service aces apiece. Yoho and Dickson each pocketed two blocks, tying a match-high. Daniels and junior
Ashley Barker (Warren, PA / Warren Area) each dished out a team-best 10 assists. Moore led Westminster on defense with eight digs, followed by Saxton (6) and Dickson (5).
The Titans conclude the Bearcat Challenge on Saturday, September 2. Westminster opens the day against Frostburg State at 12 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. match against Pitt Greensburg.
