NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team split its home Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against Thomas More College on Friday.
The Titans rallied and won game one, 9-8, and lost, 12-2, in game two.
In game one, Thomas More (24-9, 13-6 PAC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three runs in the first inning and two in the second. Freshman
Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley) put Westminster (11-20, 8-12 PAC) on the scoreboard in the third inning with an RBI-single. Westminster cut Thomas More's lead to 5-4 with three runs in the fifth; freshman
Connor Cox (Ridge, MD / Leonardtown) connected on a two-run single, while senior
Ty Ferlin (Latrobe, PA / Ligonier Valley) added an RBI-single. The Saints added three more runs in the sixth inning and led 8-4. In the bottom of the sixth, the Titans took their first lead of the game with five runs, including the eventual game-winner. Senior
Jared Baummer (Reynoldsville, PA / Dubois) scored the first run. Junior
Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) brought in the second run with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore
Michael Douds (Erie, PA / Cathedral Prep) scored the eventual game-winning run with a three-run home run, his team-leading third homer on the year. Titan junior pitcher
Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) improved to 5-2 on the season after throwing 6.1 innings, while giving up eight runs on 15 hits. Salmen struck out six and walked two.
In game two, the Saints led 9-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Westminster scored its two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Douds scored the first run and Salmen earned an RBI-walk for the second run. Titan senior pitcher
Nate McMaster (Stow, OH / Stow-Munroe Falls) threw 3.0 innings, while giving up seven runs on eight hits, and struck out one. The Saints outhit the Titans, 16-5.
The Titans will next play Thomas More on Sunday, April 30 for a nine-inning game at 2 p.m.
