GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 56-53, at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College Saturday afternoon.
The Titans, who were down by double-digits at halftime, made it a one-possession game in the final seconds.
Junior
Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) led the Titan offense with 17 points, her second-highest scoring performance this year. Cook was also one rebound away from a double-double, as she grabbed down a team-high nine. First-year
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) also scored in double-figures with 14 points, while registering a team-high two blocks. First-year
Brooke Lyczek (Cranberry PA / Seneca) netted eight points, while first-year
Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) and senior
Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lowellville) each tallied five. Sophomore
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) rounded out the scoring for Westminster with four points. Gage and Mathews each had six rebounds. Durbin dished-out a game-high five assists. Mathews pocketed a team-best two steals.
Westminster outshot Grove City 36.2% (21-58) to 34.9% (22-63) and outrebounded the Wolverines 41-39.
Westminster (9-14, 4-12 PAC) started the game with a 4-0 lead after Cook made a layup with 7:18 on the clock. Grove City (12-11, 8-8 PAC), however, outscored the Titans 19-6 for the remainder of the quarter and led 19-10 at the end of one. The Wolverines took their first double-digit lead, 21-10, with 8:29 to play in the second quarter and led 31-20 at intermission. The Titans got within three points of Grove City's lead twice in the third quarter, but the Wolverines led 44-38 at the end of the frame. In the fourth quarter, Grove City led 54-45 with 4:57 to play. Westminster answered with a 6-0 run, capped off by a pair of free throws by Fromknecht, to cut the Wolverines' lead to 54-51 with 1:32 remaining. Grove City regained its five-point lead after two free throws of its own, but Mathews made a layup with 12 seconds remaining to bring the Wolverines' lead back down to three. Following a turnover by the Wolverines, Westminster had an opportunity to tie the game, but a three-point attempt as time expired came up short.
The Titans will next compete at Geneva College on Wednesday, February 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
