Men’s Soccer: Cisse, Mattocks Help Titans Win, 2-1, Over W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -  The Westminster College men's soccer team defeated Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Washington & Jefferson College, 2-1, on the road Saturday afternoon.

Westminster improved its record to 8-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the PAC, while W&J fell to 9-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Westminster took no time in scoring the first goal of the game. In the second minute, Titan sophomore Peter Mattocks (Saegertown, PA / Saegertown) received a corner kick from sophomore Ahmed Cisse (Germantown, MD / Clarksburg) and headed it into the back of the net.

Just 34 seconds later, W&J's Sam Caurdy found teammate Matt Kotkiewicz inside the penalty box for a goal. Mattocks and Kotkiewicz's goals were the only goals scored in the first half, making it a 1-1 game at halftime.

In the 67th minute, Mattocks found Cisse downfield with a long ball pass. Cisse dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box and chipped it over the goalie's head, giving the Titans a 2-1 lead. The goal was the eventual game winner for Westminster, as Titan freshman goalkeeper Chance Herbst (Chagrin Falls, OH / Chagrin Falls) stopped everything in his path from there on out to help seal the victory. Herbst finished with a career-high nine saves in 90 minutes of play.

Titan freshman Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) added three shots (including one on goal) and sophomore Nick Cimini (Mars, PA / Mars Area) had two shots with one on goal.

Westminster is back in action Tuesday, October 24 at Thomas More College. Thomas More is currently first in the PAC, while Westminster sits tied for fourth. Start time is set for 2:30 p.m.
