NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team won its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game of the season after a 76-74 victory over Geneva College at home Wednesday night.
Senior
Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lowellville) led all scorers with a career-high 23 points, which included a game- and career-best six three-pointers. Durbin also tied with Gabby Holko and Desiree Sterling for most three-pointers in a game in school history. Junior
Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) scored 14 points, while first-year
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) had 12. Sophomore
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) and first-year
Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) each had eight points, while junior
Paige Quinn (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) earned seven. Cook registered her first double-double of the season as she grabbed down a team-high 11 rebounds. Mathews and Fromknecht added seven and six rebounds, respectively. Mathews dished out a team-high five assists, while Fromknecht tallied a game-high two blocks. Quinn also led the team with two steals.
Westminster (6-10, 1-8 PAC) outshot Geneva (4-12, 1-8 PAC) 41.3% (26-63) to 37.3% (25-67) and outrebounded the Golden Tornadoes 47-36.
Geneva led 18-9 in the first quarter with 4:49 on the clock. Westminster responded and ended the quarter with a 12-2 run to take its first lead, 21-20. The Titans started the second quarter with a 10-2 run and led 31-22 with 6:32 remaining. Westminster had its largest lead of 11 points (35-24) when Fromknecht made layup with 3:50 left. Geneva ended the half with a 12-4 run to cut Westminster's lead to 39-36. The Titans maintained the lead in the third quarter and led 56-51 at the end of three. The Titans were up by as much as 10 points in the fourth quarter, however, Geneva cut Westminster's lead to 75-74 with five seconds remaining. Quinn split a pair of free throws and Geneva's jumper at the buzzer came up short.
Westminster is back on the court Saturday, January 21 with a road game at Thiel College starting at 1 p.m.
