Baseball: W&J Sweeps Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team was swept by Washington & Jefferson College at home in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Wednesday.
 
The Titans lost game one, 1-0, and fell 9-3 in the nightcap.
 
In game one, Washington & Jefferson (10-7, 5-3 PAC) scored the game's only run in the top of the sixth inning when Michael Ruffing scored after a Titan error. Senior Kyle Borton (Mineral Ridge, OH / Mineral Ridge) (1-4) pitched a complete game, while only allowing two hits. He struck out six and walked one. Junior Sean Coyne (New Castle, PA / New Castle) led the Titan offense with two hits.
 
In the second game, Westminster tied the game at 1 in the fourth inning after sophomore Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) scored senior Ryan Dunn (Freeport, PA / Freeport). The Presidents pulled away after scoring one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and five in the seventh. The Titans added two more runs in the their last at bat; junior Jared Baummer (Reynoldsville, PA / Dubois) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring sophomore CJ Armstrong (Lake Worth, FL / Park Vista), and freshman Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) tripled home Baummer. Titan junior Nate McMaster (Stow, OH / Stow-Munroe Falls) (0-5) pitched 6.0 innings, while giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits. He struck out one and walked none. Dunn registered a team-high two hits, including a double - his team-leading seventh of the season.
 
Westminster (2-18, 0-8 PAC) will next host Thiel College on Saturday, April 9 in a conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
