Box Score BETHANY, W. Va. - The Westminster College football team won 38-24 at Bethany College Saturday afternoon in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener.
Titan senior
Michael Frankowski (Imperial, PA / West Allegheny) had a career day with game- and career-highs six catches, 71 yards, and two touchdowns.
Titan junior Gator Phillips (Deland, FL / Deland) had a game-high two interceptions, including an 89-yard return for a touchdown.Â
Westminster scored on its first drive of the game after sophomore
Paul Columbo (Boca Raton, FL / West Boca Raton Community) found Frankowski for a 12-yard touchdown pass. After a successful extra point by junior
Justin Dahl (Cochranton, PA / Maplewood), the Titans led 7-0 with 10:43 left in the first quarter.
Bethany took advantage of good field position late in the first quarter and got on the scoreboard following a 44-yard run by Antonio Hannah. Chris Ray's point-after-touchdown tied the game, 7-7, with 4:41 on the clock. The Bison capitalized after a Titan fumble on Westminster's 42-yard line. Bethany drove down the field and took the lead after a 2-yard touchdown run by Jalen Holmes. Ray's PAT gave Bethany a 14-7 lead with 39 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
On the Titans' ensuing possession, Westminster tied the game, 14-14, following another Columbo-Frankowski connection (this time from two yards out) and a PAT by Dahl with 9:28 remaining in the first half.
A 24-yard field goal by Ray with two seconds on the clock gave Bethany a 17-14 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Westminster began their first drive in good field position at Bethany's 49 yard-line after the Titan defense stopped the Bison on fourth down. Three plays later, sophomore
Dominique McKinley (Greensburg, PA / Greensburg-Salem) ran it in the end zone from 29 yards out. Dahl's extra-point put Westminster back in front, 21-17 with 11:53 to go in the third.
Phillips extended Westminster's lead to 27-17 after he returned an interception 89 yards for a touchdown. After a PAT by Dahl, Westminster went on top 28-17 with 4:39 left in the third.
Bethany cut into Westminster's lead on their ensuing possession after a 7-play, 78-yard drive, capped off with a 27-yard touchdown run by Lincon Reyes. Westminster led 28-24 after Ray kicked the PAT.
Westminster added insurance in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore
Kimu Kim (Canfield, OH / Canfield) and a 38-yard field goal by Dahl.
Columbo finished the game 15 for 25 with two touchdowns and an interception. McKinley tallied a game-high 84 yards on the ground with a score.
Junior
Mac Quinn (Pittsburgh, PA / Northgate) led the Titan defense with a career-high 13 tackles, including two tackles for a loss, a forced fumble, and a half sack. Westminster's defense had four interceptions, led by Phillips with two. The Titans also had a total of three sacks, led by sophomore CJ Armstrong (Lake Worth, FL / Park Vista) with 1.5.
For the game, Bethany held a 342-307 yard advantage.
Westminster will host Thomas More College in its home opener next Saturday at 1 p.m.
