NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's basketball team lost, 89-78, to Heidelberg University in the opening night of Westminster's Buzz Ridl Classic in the Titans' home opener Friday night.
In the first half, Westminster (0-3) led by as much as eight points (14-6) when junior John Arcuri (Oakmont, PA / Saint Joseph) found sophomore
Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) for a layup with 13:50 on the clock.
The Student Princes (1-1) went on a 17-9 run to tie the game at 23 with 9:17 to play in the first frame. Heidelberg took its first lead (28-27) after a three-pointer by Shane Lee with 6:49 to go.
Titan senior
Paul Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) tied the game at 40 after he split a pair of free throws with under a minute remaining. Heidelberg led 45-40 at halftime after a 5-0 run.
Heidelberg took its first double-digit lead (52-42) with 17:58 on the clock in the second half.
Westminster got within two points of Heidelberg's lead (60-58) after a three-pointer by freshman
Austin Armwood (Westerville, OH / Westerville North) with 12:54 remaining, however that would be the closest the Titans would come for the remainder of the game.
The Titans did get within three points after a pair of free throws by sophomore
Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) with 7:28 on the clock. The Student Princes, however, responded with a 25-15 run to take a commanding 85-73 lead with 1:27 remaining.
Three Titans scored in double-figures, led by Arcuri with 16 points; who also had a team-high four three-pointers. Carswell and Scott scored 15 and 11 points, respectively. Armwood and Vrabel added eight points each. Scott led the Titans with eight rebounds, followed by Vrabel with six. Vrabel and
Brandon Domenick (New Castle, PA / New Castle) both had a team-best four assists.
Westminster will play its final game of the Buzz Ridl Classic tomorrow versus Hiram College at 4 p.m.
In the first game of the Classic, Hiram edged Thiel College 84-81.
