Football: Westminster Snaps Road Skid with Win at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. - The Westminster College football team picked up its first win of the season by snapping a nine-game road losing streak Saturday with a 27-14 victory at Saint Vincent. 

Westminster senior tailback Nick McKolosky (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) posted a career high in rush attempts as he toted the ball 31 times for 121 yards and one touchdown. Three of McKolosky's nine career 100-yard rushing games have come against Saint Vincent.

McKolosky's 1-yard touchdown run capped off a 13-play, 72-yard march on the Titans' opening drive of the game. McKolosky also caught three passes for 26 yards and a 13-yard touchdown in the second quarter that gave Westminster a 17-7 lead.

The Titans (1-2) outgained Saint Vincent (0-3) by a 317-225 margin, including 150 rushing yards on 44 attempts and 167 passing yards on 21 throws.

Westminster senior quarterback Kevin Franz (Finleyville, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) completed 15 of 19 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, including the one to McKolosky and a second the senior receiver Jon Gubish (Pittsburgh, Pa./Northgate) from 36 yards out to make the score 27-7 in the third quarter.

The Titans' other six points came off the foot of sophomore kicker Trevor Young (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside), who connected on a 42-yarder to make it 10-7 in the first quarter and a 21-yarder to put the Titans up 20-7 in the third quarter.

Saint Vincent answered Westminster's touchdown on its first drive of the game by marching 74 yards on eight plays and finishing with Zach Mihalko scoring on a19-yard pass play from Kevin Corona.

The Bearcats marched 75 yards on 13 plays and scored early in the fourth quarter on a trick play on fourth-down-and-goal from the Titan 2 yard line. Running back Jarius Marlow took a handoff and then floated a jump pass to tight end Jake Gabelt wide open in the back of the end zone.

Mihalko led the Saint Vincent ground attack with 37 yards on 40 carries, while Saint Vincent quarterbacks Corona (9-20 for 86 yards in first half) and Jake Smith (6-17 for 87 in the second half accounted for 173 yards.

Westminster also intercepted four Saint Vincent passes, two by freshman Kyle Allen (New Wilmington, Pa./West Middlesex) and one by freshman Derrick Orloski (Butler, Pa./Slippery Rock) for the first of their careers. Senior Mario Camerota (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale) also intercepted a pass, the second of the season and the fifth of his career.

The Titan defense also came up big with four sacks by four different players.

Junior inside linebacker Cory Meeker (Glen Dale, W.Va./John Marshall) led the Titans with eight tackles, followed by senior defensive end Neil Falco (Pleasantville, Pa./Titusville) with six tackles, including one sack.

The 13-point victory at Chuck Noll Field was the first road win for the Titans the last time Westminster visited Saint Vincent, 48-7, on Sept. 8, 2007. The Titans' nine-game road losing streak was the longest in the modern era of Westminster football (since 1946).

Westminster hosts Thomas More Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1:30 p.m.
