Men's Soccer: Westminster Wins at Pitt-Bradford in Season Opener

BRADFORD, Pa. - The Westminster College men's soccer team opened the 2009 season with a 2-1 non-conference win at Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday. After a scoreless first half, the Titans (1-0) took a 2-0 lead before hanging on for the win.

Sophomore Jason Mezyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scored the first goal of the game off a cornerkick from classmate Coty Hainsey (New Paris, Pa./Chestnut Ridge). The tally occurred just 1:14 into the second half. Junior Aaron Zavora (Westmoreland City, Pa./Norwin) gave the Titans a 2-0 lead thanks to an assist from senior Jarred Smeltzer (Wilmerding, Pa./East Allegheny) in the 54th minute.

Carson Zachary scored for Pitt-Bradford (0-1) in the 74th minute to prevent Westminster junior goalkeeper Mike Codita (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) from notching the shutout. Codita made one save during the game as Westminster held a 30-4 shot advantage. Zavora led the Titans with six shots.
