NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's and women's soccer teams both posted 4-1 wins over visiting Waynesburg on Saturday evening in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Harold Burry Stadium.
The Westminster men improve to 13-5 on the season and 5-0 in the PAC while the Titan women are now 13-2-2 and 4-0-1 in the league. The Waynesburg men are 5-11-2 and 0-3-1 in the PAC and the Yellow Jacket women are 7-7-2 and 2-3 in conference games.
In the men's game, Westminster freshman Jarred Smeltzer (Wilmerding, Pa./East Allegheny) and senior Chris Ellwanger (South Park, Pa./South Park) each posted a goal and an assist. Ellwanger assisted on Smeltzer's eighth goal of the season as the Titans took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
Ellwanger then scored his second of the season in the 20th minute and, after J.C. Danhires scored for Waynesburg to cut the lead to 2-1 in the second half, Smeltzer assisted on a goal by junior Ian Hill (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) in the 71st minute. Hill's goal was his sixth of the season.
Sophomore Wade Grubbs (Chicora, Pa./Butler) scored a late unassisted goal in the 82nd minute for his first of the season.
Westminster sophomore goalkeeper Mike Codita (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) got the win without registering a save in the first half, while sophomore Lance Leathers (Pleasant Gap, Pa./Bellefonte) made four saves in the second half.
In the women's game, senior Christina Adams (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) scored her PAC-leading 17th goal of the season just two minutes into the game. Adams also assisted on a goal by sophomore Sarah Nee (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) in the 21st minute that gave Westminster a 3-0 lead. Nee is now second in the PAC behind Adams with 16 goals.
Other Westminster goals included senior Jessi Losteter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) with a header off a corner kick by freshman Samantha Killmeyer (Medina, Ohio/Highland) in the 20th minute. Losteter's goal was her second of the year.
Killmeyer, who entered last week leading the nation in assists with one per game, registered her 15th of the season which ties Mallory Bugel (2006) for the second-most assists in a season. The team record is 16 by Tammy Newell in 2001.
Three Westminster goalkeepers saw action including senior Lindsey Mellott (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) getting the win with one save.
The Westminster men host Grove City on Tuesday at 3 p.m. while the women host the Wolverines Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Titan men have already locked up first place in next week's PAC Tournament while the women need a win to clinch the top seed.
