NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's soccer team won the first home outdoor sporting event played on campus at night. The Titans defeated Geneva, 2-1, Saturday night at the newly-renovated Harold Burry Stadium.
Westminster improves to 9-4 on the season while Geneva falls to 10-3.
Junior forward Jarred Smeltzer (Wilmerding, Pa./East Allegheny) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with eight minutes left in regulation. His sixth goal of the season was the first since the opening seven minutes of the match.
Junior forward Brice Lott (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) opened the scoring for the Titans in the sixth minute on an assist from senior defender Chris Ellwanger (South Park, Pa./South Park). Less than a minute later, Kenton Burckhart tied the game for Geneva on a penalty kick.
The Titans out-shot the Golden Tornadoes 28-5. Westminster sophomore goalkeeper Mike Codita (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) notched the win by making a pair of saves.
Westminster returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Thiel at 7 p.m.
