WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating Alfred, 66-60, Saturday in day two of the Holiday Inn Meadow Lands Classic hosted by Washington & Jefferson.
Senior guard/forward Emilee Ackerman (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) tied a career high with 27 points to go with 12 rebounds for her fourth career "double-double" to lead Westminster. Ackerman made 11 of 18 shots from the field.
Freshman Kaitlin McCarthy (Lowellville, Ohio/Lowellville) and sophomore center Rachel Martinko (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) each scored nine points for the Titans.
Melanie Jackson led Alfred (0-2) with 19 points.
After leading by as many as nine points (26-17), the Titans took a 30-28 into halftime. With the exception of Lisa Button hitting a 3-pointer to give Alfred a 31-30 lead to start the second half, Westminster led the entire second half but could not exceed more than an eight-point advantage.
Westminster returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 20, when it hosts Pitt-Bradford at 6 p.m.
